Your role

CBC Toronto is looking for someone with the technical expertise and people skills to support the station’s growth in a media environment that is changing every day. This person is collaborative and innovative, keen to work closely with our teams as they focus on building new audiences who are streaming live audio and video or looking for updates on demand. If this is you, you get your energy from solving problems and inspiring others.
Reporting to the Director of Operations - Toronto Local Services, you will supervise the day-to-day needs of the staff in the Toronto Local Newsroom, Radio Current Affairs our regional stations. As one division, you will also seek out, participate in and lead network initiatives, with responsibilities ranging from technical requirements to operations within the newsroom, a wide swath that requires TV, Radio and Online expertise.

Staying on top of innovative technologies and advanced workflows will be an essential part of this role. Along with the support of the Director of Toronto Local Services, you will offer technical support to staff, assess training needs and implement your expertise by recommending the best tools necessary for production both in / out of TBC. You will also lead all initiatives in creating departmental best practices, workflows and procedures.

You will liaise with editorial programs and managers to help in the coordination of resources during major events and breaking news. You will recommend cost effective solutions and implement reliable technical systems to satisfy all production requirements. You will - when operationally required - be expected to work unscheduled overtime. You will also be expected to answer phone calls and emails outside of your normal working hours.

Responsibilities Include
  • Tend to the day to day operations of TV, Radio and Online, including helping staff work through issues that they may have while under deadline.
  • Coordinate with various stakeholders when resources are required.
  • Make equipment purchases through our E-Plaza system.
  • Complete and circulate holiday radio NRT’s.
  • Search out replacement AP techs when sick calls arise.
  • Arrange logistics for radio news specials or staffing emergencies involving other centers.
  • Arrange presentation logistics (Radio and TV) for events such as Sounds of the Season or Election specials. Work with the assigned Technical Producer to help facilitate the production.
  • Management of local vehicle fleet.
  • Research new technologies and make recommendations on purchasing new production tools.
  • Ensure technical equipment is maintained, well organized and properly functioning.
  • Demonstrate the technical operation of broadcasting equipment.
  • Manage operations at the City Hall and Queen’s Park Bureaus, as well as inputs in our other regional centers.
  • Deal with any studio issues in the main studio and or the two booths.
We Are Looking For a Candidate With The Following
  • University degree or related experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in a similar role.
  • Strong interest and understanding of current technology.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of media operations and field production on all platforms.
  • A passion for following the latest in innovative technology.
  • A genuine interest in News and Current Affairs content.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills - written and verbal, with the proven ability to explain potentially complicated technical concepts to non-technical users.
  • Strong organization skills are a must.
  • Proven ability to lead, manage and advise a diverse group of creative individuals.
  • Skilled at communicating with vendors with regard to purchasing, technical issues or support.
  • Detailed familiarity with Online, Television and Radio production systems, implementation of new technology and ability to coordinate system upgrades.
  • Experience working on multiple platforms - digital and conventional broadcasting.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to translate technical ideas into business context when presenting a rationale for improvements, changes or advising production.
  • Provide updates and progress reports to management.
  • Strong attention to detail.
